We, as a Beth Haven staff, know the impact reading can have on a child’s life. It is important to cultivate a love for reading within the mind and heart of a child. Reading, comprehension and critical thinking affect academics, spiritual growth, and maturity. Our philosophy to help a student develop in these three areas will allow for growth and improvement not only in the classroom but also in his daily life. With this philosophy, we wanted to revamp our summer reading into a positive, encouraging, goal-orientated mindset instead of a “punishment” mindset.

Elementary
Elementary students will be encouraged to read a minimum of twelve hours this summer. This amount boils down to a simple nine minutes per day. There are several ways that this can be accomplished and maybe even exceeded. The local library has a reading program where students are given prizes based off the number of books they have read. Half Price Books also offers gift cards as a reward based off the number of minutes read over the summer. Links are included for summer reading programs at the end of the e-mail.
Each elementary teacher has given a top five favorite book list for his grade level. Hopefully, this list can be used as a guide for helping your children pick out books this summer. A reading log will be attached with this e-mail. Please record the number of minutes that you read to your child or that your child has read each time they read this summer. The reading log will be collected on the first day of school, and incentives will be given to students for every hour of reading they have completed individually and as a class.
Middle School
Middle school students will be encouraged to read fifteen hours this summer. This boils down to just twelve minutes a day. There are several ways that this can be accomplished and maybe even exceeded. Half Price Books also offers gift cards as a reward based off the number of minutes read over the summer. Links are included for summer reading programs at the end of the e-mail. A list of books has been compiled based off genre and recommendation for this age group. Hopefully, this list can be used as a guide for helping your children pick out books this summer.

After reaching the bonus point maximum, students will be given a homework pass for every hour of reading completed after fifteen. Class rewards will be decided at the beginning of next school year.
High School
High school students will be encouraged to read twenty hours this summer. This boils down to just sixteen minutes a day. There are several ways that this can be accomplished and maybe even exceeded. A list of books has been compiled based off genre and recommendation for this age group. Hopefully, this list can be used as a guide for helping your children pick out books this summer.
